How to become a HAM radio operator
Amateur radio in India is regulated by the Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) Wing. You must pass the ASOC exam and obtain a station license before transmitting on amateur bands.
-
Learn the basics
Study radio theory, regulations, and operating procedures for the Amateur Station Operator Certificate (ASOC) examination conducted by the WPC Wing, Department of Telecommunications, Government of India.
-
Prepare for the ASOC exam
RIRCOM’s Training & Publishing Wing (VU2JFF) conducts ASOC training for students, Home Guards, scouts, and newcomers. Contact the club for upcoming batches.
-
Apply and appear for the exam
Register through the official DoT eServices portal or Saral Sanchar, submit required documents, and sit for the ASOC written examination at a centre assigned by WPC.
-
Obtain your station license
After passing ASOC, apply for an amateur wireless telegraph station license. You will receive a callsign (e.g. VU3…) and may operate on permitted amateur bands under Indian rules.
-
Get on the air
Join the amateur radio community, practice with licensed operators, and consider RIRCOM membership (VU2IRD) for mentoring, workshops, and public-service activities.
What is amateur radio?
HAM radio lets licensed operators communicate worldwide using HF, VHF, and UHF — including satellite and digital modes. In India, amateurs also serve as a second line of communication during disasters and public events. RIRCOM’s club station (VU2IRD) operates HF, VHF, and UHF facilities for training and emergency preparedness.
